I have a confession to make, and I am certain that I am not the only person in the Mawgan (Helford) area to be hiding this rather shameful secret. For several months now, I have been passing off the sinfully delicious sticky toffee pudding created by Greg and Alli Laskey, as part of their Fresshh! range, as my own. My husband thinks I am a culinary genius.
The couple both laugh when I confide in them in the snug of Mawgan’s Ship Inn, which they run. “That’s why the range has the ‘ssh’ part of its name,” explains Alli. “You can easily put together food for a whole dinner party, and everyone will think it is freshly cooked, because it is. The meals are made exactly as we make them for our pub diners, and then snap-frozen to lock in all the flavour and nutrients.”
Of course, supermarkets have been offering their higher end ready meals for some time now, but the Fresshh! range has proved particularly popular, not least because Greg is a highly skilled chef with a fantastic reputation for consistently producing really wonderful food.
Having trained with Cornwall’s first Michelin- starred chef, Kevin Viner, Greg and Alli ran their own restaurant Soanes in Petworth West Sussex for six years before returning to Cornwall to start a family. Greg has since been head chef at The New Yard Restaurant in Trelowarren and at the Helford Sailing Club. Alli later reveals that he was once the Chefs and Cooks Circle junior master chef of Great Britain, “although he’ll kill me for telling you”. She herself is a trained pastry chef, and a very charming, incredibly efficient hostess.
